Description:
Japanese ivory carvings, likely from the Meiji period (1868-1912), known as netsuke or okimono. Netsuke: are miniature sculptures, originally used as fasteners for inro boxes, which held personal items. Okimono: are similar to netsuke but are typically larger and primarily decorative, intended for display. These carvings often depict figures from Japanese folklore, daily life, or animals, showcasing intricate craftsmanship.
Ivory carvings became particularly popular in the Meiji era, especially for export to Western markets, as artisans adapted to new demands after the Meiji Restoration.
This pieces of vintage ivory carvings are part of RAF recent acquisition during his trip to India on July 2025.
