Description:
This is Philips, a prominent manufacturer of vacuum tube radios since the 1920s, began its shift to all-transistor models in the mid-to-late 1950s, following the commercial availability of portable transistor radios in 1954. The company introduced early models like the Transistor Six pocket radio in the late 1950s, but one of its first notable solid-state offerings was the L3F60T Portaletta, which was released in 1957. Production of Philips transistor radios continued throughout the 1960s and 1970s, during which billions were sold globally, offering listeners unprecedented portability. Their popularity began to wane toward the end of the 1970s as other portable media devices, such as boomboxes and cassette players, emerged. However, Philips continued producing radios into the 1980s, including popular multiband and world band models like the Compass line. It was acquired by the AL Faraj Gallery on September 14, 2025.
