Description:
The object shown is a Chinese cinnabar lacquer censer, a traditional type of incense burner. It is characterized by its red color, achieved through the use of cinnabar, a mercury-based mineral, mixed with lacquer. The material is applied in multiple thin layers over a base and then carved to create detailed designs. This censer is a tripod vessel with three legs, two side handles, and a domed lid topped with a finial shaped like a lion or foo dog. The surface is decorated with intricate carvings depicting traditional Chinese motifs, reflecting the detailed techniques used in its production. It was obtained by the AL Faraj Gallery on the 5th of October 2025
