The Global War on Terrorism Service Medal (GWOT-SM) is a United States military award established on March 12, 2003, by President George W. Bush through Executive Order 13289. It honors service members who supported counter-terrorism operations following the September 11, 2001 attacks, whether domestically or abroad. Eligibility generally required 30 consecutive or 60 non-consecutive days of active duty in designated operations, with exceptions for combat or injury. As of September 11, 2022, the criteria were updated to focus on direct service in specific military counter-terrorism missions. Early qualifying operations included Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Noble Eagle.
