William Reid, the son of a Scottish crofter, originally arrived in Madeira in 1836. He hired out quintas to wealthy invalids and moved on to hotels, but died before his Reid s hotel was completed.The hotel was designed by the architects George Somers Clarke and John Thomas Micklethwaite. It opened as the New Hotel in November 1891 and later became the New Palace Hotel, then Reid s Palace or just Reid s . The hotel was acquired by Orient-Express Hotels Ltd., which changed its name to Belmond Ltd. on 10 March 2014. At that time the hotel changed its name to Belmond Reid s Palace.

Montblanc - Noblesse Oblige Rollerball Pen A member of the 4th Generation of Noblesse Series produced in the 1980’s. It has a special shiny green laquer and shiny gold plated trims. Montblanc ventured into the cheaper pen market in 70s and 80s, starting with slimlines and then Noblesse versions. Noblesse Oblige was marketed in mid 90s and stopped production in 2004 when Montblanc dediced to be a luxury brand company only. The design was probably made by Aurora after its Hastil design for Montblanc.

Parker 45 Fountain and Ball Point Pen, made in England, stainless silver steel barrel and cap, arrow clip, and engraved emblem. The Parker “45” was initially a low-priced pen, eventually made in many colors and FInishes, and is considered as one of Parkers many survivors (1960 - 2007). Parker always tried to FIll the demands for both expensive and economy line pens. This pen, subsequently known as “The School Pen” was aimed to shoot into and make a kill on the economy market. It was introduced in 1960. The Parker 45 was designed by Don Doman (who also designed the Jotter, Parker 61, Parker VP, Parker 75, Parker T1, and Liquid Lead). He based it on an Eversharp design, called the Eversharp “10000”, a cartridge pen the rights to which Parker acquired when they bought the pen division of Eversharp in 1957. The body of the Parker 45 was tapered at both ends, creating a slimmer and lighter pen.

Parker 35 Ball Point Pen, made in France , Greyish brown thuya (wood grain) barrel and cap, golden arrow clip, and engraved emblem. At First glance, the Parker “35” looks very much like the Parker “75”, and has sometimes been called as the “Baby 75”., although, the features, sans the size and nib, are actually more similar to the Parker “180”. The Parker “35” was a pen with an open nib introduced in 1979 (1979 - 1986) as a smaller and lower priced cousin to the Parker “75” and Parker “180”, sharing many finishes. It does not however, like the Parker “85” and Premier, clearly belong the the Parker “75” core family since few parts are interchangeable. Parker “35”had a black, plastic section and a combined ink feed, smaller, very similar, but not identical, to the one on the Parker “75”. The Parker “35” section was rounded and smooth, the tassies were thinner and had a medium sized smooth cap band with band with the lettering “Parker Made in France”. The easiest way to spot a Parker “35” from a Parker “75” is that the cap slids over the body, while both Parker “75” and Parker “180” have the caps ush with the body. The Parker “35” was discontinued in 1986.
